Baltimore Stories

Looking left from the top of the Key Bridge every time I travel home, the city looks like the jumbled lot it is--industrial, harbor-bound, sophisticated, homey, old and new. Confessions in Birdsong is set in a pre and post-uprising Baltimore. From a small neighborhood outside of Canton, through the old churches, into Fells Point, along the harbor, and back into Mount Vernon, the main characters are changed by the city and seek to change it. The short story "Claude in the Rain" begins and ends in Fells Point.

Claude in the Rain
A rainy day in Fells Point, a bakery and two strangers . . . throw in a neighborhood church and you've conjured Baltimore.
